A STUNNING collaboration between Limerick based producer MynameisjOhn and MC God Knows has had our head in a twist for the last week.

The duo have released the album Rusangano /Family, an 11-track monster boasting a hefty dose of honest double-edged lyricism over skewed soul samples, 808 beats and sliced-up breaks.

Top scratch turntablist Mynameisj0hn - alter ego of Clare man John Lillis, who plies his trade in Limerick - has been on our radar since 2011’s 9-track release There Is A Policeman Inside All Our Heads and follow-up EP The Thinker and The Prover, which featured progressive, eye-opening music made through turntables, laptops, mixers and samplers.

His collaboration with charismatic MC God Knows - part of the Shannon based Random Acts Of Kindness collective, has pushed both men’s skills to a new planet.

The duo say that they wear their “hiphop and electronic influences proudly on their sleeves” and “aren’t an act willing to conform to the styles associated with their respective backgrounds”.

“Instead of struggling with the idea of being different, we celebrate it. Sure the rules are only there to be broken,” they add.

This is one of the most exciting hip-hop/electronic/mash-up albums you are likely to hear emerge from the Irish music scene over this, or any other, year. Check it out immediately.
