RENOWNED musician Michelle Mulcahy, from Abbeyfeale, is set to give her final performance exam part of her four-year PhD in Arts Practice in the IrishWorld Academy of Music and Dance in UL next week.

RENOWNED musician Michelle Mulcahy, from Abbeyfeale, is set to give her final performance exam part of her four-year PhD in Arts Practice in the IrishWorld Academy of Music and Dance in UL next week.

The multi-instrumentalist, who is amazingly, equally adept at harp, fiddle, uileann pipes and concertina, will perform on Wednesday, March 20 at 7.30pm in the Irish World Academy.

Michelle won the TG4 Young Traditional Musician of the year two years ago.

She will perform Aistear - meaning journey - a solo harp compositional work containing an eclectic mix of music from the Irish and South East Asian ethnic harping traditions.

Mulcahy’s research is on the harping tradition of the Karen people of the Mae La refugee camp on the Thai/Burma border and she has made several visits there as part of her research. All of the proceeds from the concert will go to the Mae La refugees, some of 25,000 of whom are in the camp.
