AWARD winning turntablist Jon 1st returns to the city this Friday to help launch the upcoming Prima Volta festival.
The World DMC title winning-DJ will play at the launch party in the Kasbah Social Club for the three day festival, which takes place in October.
Supported by City of Culture, Prima Volta has hooked up with the groundbreaking Hoya:Hoya clubnight in Manchester and London’s Eglo Records to bring a varied line-up of top DJs and artists to Limerick, with gigs to take place in Dolan’s Warehouse on Friday and Saturday night, October 3 and 4.
“We are delighted with the line-up, we couldn’t have asked for more,” explained Peter Curtin, DJ and one of the organisers of Prima Volta.
“We worked in conjunction with Hoya:Hoya for the Friday night - that is one of the best clubnights in Europe. It moves out of Manchester now and again, but mainly just to Fabric in London so it is a real privilege that they are bringing their wares to Limerick.
“The Saturday is a label showcase and we looked at Eglo, which is one of our favourite labels, they have been doing lots of great things through the years.
“They were down with the idea of doing a showcase, so we have Fatimah - who put out possibly one of the best albums of the year in my opinion - and the live Eglo band playing,” he added.
Also playing over the various nights are an impressive collection of DJs and musicians including Jonny Dub, Ninja Tune’s Illum Sphere, Jon K and MC Chunky, plus Eglo label head Alexander Nut and former LA based producer and DJ Kutmah.
“There has been a lot of things going on in the city down through the years between various promoters and musicians running gigs and events, and it is kind of a bringing together of a lot of these groups,” explained Peter.
“We put the proposal together last September for City of Culture and the idea was to try to get a collective together and put together a festival that represents that,” he added.
Also taking place on the Saturday in Mickey Martin’s is a Beats n’ Brunch event with sounds courtesy of Teddy and a Block Party on the Sunday with internationally renowned DJ LeFto from Brussels, Junior Spesh from Dublin and Bap to the Future from Galway, plus Peter himself and the wonderful mynameisjOhn playing DJ sets.
First up this Friday is DJ whizz Jon1st, who played a riotous gig in the Blind Pig in February.
“He said Limerick was his favourite gig that he has done all year so he is delighted to be coming back,” explained Peter.
