CHRISTMAS has traditionally been a season for musical treats and it will be no different in Rathkeale this year when Moya Brennan and her band join forces with the choir from Colaiste na Trocaire.
The concert takes place in St Mary’s church on Tuesday, December 18 and is intended to raise money for the school’s music funds.
“It is exactly a week before Christmas Day and promises to be a lovely evening,” says Jean O’Brien, music teacher at the school and the driving force behind the concert. But the school and its 90-plus strong choir are no strangers to Moya Brennan.
“This will be our third Christmas concert with Moya and our fifth overall,” Jean explains. The school first linked up with Moya Brennan for a concert in St John’s Cathedral way back in 2004.
“We have kept up a friendship since.
“Essentially, the concert is part of Moya’s Christmas tour. We will be hosting her and her band but the choir will also get an opportunity, at the end of the concert, to sing with Moya.”
Jean expects Ms Brennan to sing a mix of Irish and European carols, Christmas songs, traditional songs and some of her own compositions.
The choir, which is drawn from the entire student population, will open the concert and will be joined by a number of musical past pupils, among them Derek Hickey of De Danann and singer Laura Kelly.
Parish priest Fr Phonsie Cullinane will join the choir for two special numbers, the Ave Maria and O little town of Bethlehem.
“It is lovely to have him on board and to have this musical link between the church and the school,” Jean says, adding that they have enjoyed rehearsing with him.
“This is really an all-school event,” she adds, pointing out that students are on the organising committee and have been busy selling tickets and promoting it.
“We are expecting a good turn-out.”
The concert begins at 7.30pm and tickets cost €20 or €10 concession. A family ticket is also available for €50.
They can be bought through the school at 069-64094, at Future Sound and Vision in Limerick.
