LIMERICK is gearing up to welcome over 200 performers for a choral festival on the June Bank Holiday weekend.

LIMERICK is gearing up to welcome over 200 performers for a choral festival on the June Bank Holiday weekend.

The inaugural Limerick Sings International Choral Festival will bring together local, national and international choirs in the city for a weekend of non-competitive singing.

Organisers expect “a feast of wonderful music” with performances at St Mary’s Cathedral and the University Concert Hall on June 1-2.

“We are so looking forward to welcoming old friends and new on this inaugural occasion of Limerick Sings International Choral Festival 2013,” said event manager and festival co-ordinator Dolores Hanly.

“Limerick is known for its strong choral tradition and beautiful musical venues and it is a great opportunity for us to share this with local, national and international audiences.

“We are confident that this inaugural celebration will become a regular annual event celebrating choral music on the city’s festival calendar,” she explained.

The formal opening of the choral festival will take place on Saturday, June 1, with seven choirs performing in St. Mary’s Cathedral.

A ‘Choral Extravaganza’ concert will take place in the UCH on Sunday night, and Ms Hanly explained that the festivals programme, which features Limerick Gospel Choir, will be diverse.

“The programme of entertainment is an exciting collaboration ranging from opera, chamber music, gospel and folk to contemporary music,” explained Ms Hanly.

Lyric FM, who are based in Limerick, are supporting the festival and broadcaster Lorcan Murray said the station was delighted to do so.

“I’m thrilled Lyric FM is supporting this wonderful event and I’m personally delighted to be hosting the Choral Extravaganza,” he said.

Organisers believe the festival could grow to encompass thousands of performers in years ahead, travelling from all over Ireland, Europe and the US

“In this special year of The Gathering we are overwhelmed with the depth of support from around the country and the UK in particular,” said Ms Hanly

“The interest in the event is such that it is certain to become an annual favourite within choral circles,” she added.
