The incident happened at around 2.40am outside the old garda barracks in the village. It is understood the youth, who is from Limerick city, sustained a number of stab wounds in his back.

The 17-year-old was taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle for treatement after the attack but he has since been discharged.

Although an investigation has been launched, gardai say they have not received a formal complaint in relation to the stabbing.
