Yacht club launches new sailing season
DAMIEN McGibney and John Finnegan, both experienced military men, were chefs of the day at their flame grills at Cooleen lawn for Foynes Yacht Club's annual Commodore's Day on Sunday.
The open day is now a well-established as a family event, with a barbecue and fairground fun, as well as the spectacle of sail racing and waterside happenings. It is also the occasion for the annual blessing of the boats and marks the beginning of the summer sailing season.
Both Mermaid and white sail (no spinnaker) racing took place and the club's own Topaz juvenile training fleet was also on the water as members and visitors enjoyed the sunny afternoon and evening.
The past year has been one in which the club put a special effort into attracting younger members and this was reflected in the number of children attending on Sunday.
"We want people to see us as not a rich person's club," said commodore Tom Murray.
He said that training was given to young people and now it was hoped to encourage a greater involvement from their parents.
Mr Murray said that the club was 47 years old and had developed a new sense of activity as it approached its half-century.
He said that the club had many second generation members.
Club PRO and Sunday's officer of the day Gerry Ryan said that the costly physical improvements of recent years had largely been completed, with developments at the marina as well as at the pavilion and grounds and in the parking and wintering area.
