Volunteers celebrate opening

KILFINNY will strike a blow for community spirit and volunteering this weekend when it throws open the doors of its newly-revamped community centre.

And the party planned to celebrate this achievement will include

not only local residents, but the many international volunteers who made the project possible.

The refurbishing of the community centre also marks a milestone for the

local community council, which was only established last spring and which set out an ambitious set of targets for itself.

Chief among these targets was the restoration of the community centre –

Kilfinny's old national school – which has been transformed in the short

few months since.

The main room has been fitted out with new skirting and completely repainted, and the stage area and bathrooms have been given a facelift.

In addition, the kitchen has been gutted, the walls relined and the

entire room refitted.

All of this work has been driven by local community activists, and with

tremendous support from local residents.
