Volunteers ready for village's big clean up
THIS Saturday will see Castlemahon engage with the National Spring Clean event, with a minimum of 40 volunteers combing the parish picking up rubbish.
Castlemahon Development Association decided to undertake the picking up of discarded bottles, cans, wrapping and fast-food containers before grass and foliage covered up the trash, all of which had been discarded from passing cars.
At a meeting of the association, residents were shocked at the amount and widespread nature of the problem.
Volunteers will meet this Saturday at Castlemahon Community Centre at 11am.
It is intended to clean from Gurrane in the east to Clounsherick in the west, and from Banoke Bridge in the south to Ardrine in the north, and all roads in between. Each person in the parish is asked to participate, even if only to clean up the roadway in the immediate vicinity of their homes.
Lorraine Power, environmental awareness officer with Limerick County Council said: "Local communities are once again playing their part in this annual campaign by helping to make County Limerick a cleaner place to live. In the current era of climate change the more we recycle, the more we reduce our carbon emissions. By participating in National Spring Clean we are making a real difference."
Meanwhile, the council has issued a reminder to householders not to use community clean-ups as a means of disposing of household, domestic and garden waste.
"It has come to the council's attention that a minority of people are using the clean-ups for the disposal of such waste. We wish to remind groups that the Spring Clean campaign is for community litter clean-ups only and it is up to each householder to be responsible for domestic items or green waste from their own property," said Ms Power.
"Limerick County Council will not be able to pick up such waste as grass, green waste, rubble and bulky household items that are left for collection after a community clean-up.
It is up to householders to avail of their local waste disposal facility or recycling centre for any domestic items. We would also ask that you use the colour coded bags that you received from An Taisce and recycle as much as possible as part of your clean-up."
