A COMPLETE visiting ban remains in effect in the Mid-Western Regional Hospital.

The HSE has appealed to the public to attend the emergency department “only in real emergency situations” and said visiting restrictions remained in force as of this Thursday afternoon.

A “severe surge” in pressure on beds in the Regional this week saw hospital management put a contingency plan into place to cope with the demand, with elective surgery cancelled and patients moved to other hospitals in the region.

At 9am this Tuesday there were 42 people waiting for beds in the hospital, a high not encountered since Christmas.

That number had dropped to five by Wednesday afternoon, with one operation cancelled. Three patients were awaiting beds in the hospital as of this Thursday, with visiting restrictions still in place.

Six beds remain blocked at the Regional as a result of norovirus, which remains “widespread in the community” according to the HSE.
