Village development rejected by Limerick county council
A RESIDENTIAL and retail development in Tournafulla that was first proposed almost 12 months ago has been refused permission by Limerick County Council.
The development would have comprised two four-bedroom bungalows, two split-level detached houses, two two-storey terraced houses, one two-bedroom apartment and a retail unit with adjacent storage area.
However, the application was refused by planners last week over concerns about sewerage, traffic and its suitability for the local area.
In its ruling on the application, which was first submitted in October 2008, the council said that it was not satisfied that plans to extend the existing sewerage system in Tournafulla would be sufficient.
"Having regard to the severely deficient sewerage facilities in the area, it is considered that proper provision has not been made to accommodate foul sewer effluent from the proposed development," the council ruled.
It was also considered that the proposal, which included provision for four on-street and eight off-street parking spaces and a realignment of the main road with a new public footpath, would "endanger public safety by creating a traffic hazard."
It was also ruled that the construction, due to the "elevated nature of the site (and) the amount of excavation and design .. would be incapable of assimilating into the landscape and detract from the visible amenity of the area."
