Transport study calls for improved integration of public transport in Limerick city
A MAJOR new study has called for a better integration of public transportation services in the city.
The Mid-West Area Strategic Plan was published this week following consultation with a number of groups, including An Taisce, the local authorities and the Limerick Chamber.
And it has concluded that some €340m needs to be invested between now and 2032 to bring the region’s transport needs up to scratch.
The report states the fact that many city bus services leave from various different points across the centre serves as a sense of confusion, and frustration for customers.
Referring to the main train station, it states: “Limerick Colbert is located a short walking distance from the city centre, with the coach station adjacent. The facilities are dated, but functional, and could be enhanced to provide a better interchange environment and layout which supports adequate taxi, cycle and pedestrian provision in and on approach to the facilities.”
The strategy calls for information to be made available a lot quicker and easier for visitors to the city.
The 250-page report - which focuses on a number of towns across the Mid-West region - is also recommending investigations to take place looking at “the development of high-speed direct rail connections from Limerick (Colbert Station) to Dublin, Cork (via Kilmallock) and Waterford.”
It is proposed that the disused Mungret line is converted to be reused as a dedicated bus only line.
The line travels from the city and goes through Adare, Clarina and Foynes.
