Trail upgrade will get picnic points

ALMOST a million euro has been spent on the 17-mile off-road walking and cycling trail from Ardagh to Abbeyfeale via Newcastle West and Barnagh. Now the proposal is to provide seating and picnic areas at points along the route.

Following the upgrade of sections of the route and the clearance and surfacing work on the stretch from Newcastle West to Barnagh, there has been a very significant increase in the use of the route, according to Liam O'Mahony, Newcastle West, chairman of Great Southern Trail, the voluntary group which initiated the conversion of the former railway line for recreational use.

Now, he said, the GST would like local people in each community or parish along the trail "to become involved in their own few miles".

"In the future it is hoped to provide seating and picnic areas etc, and local input into your trail will be essential," said Mr O'Mahony.

The annual church gate collection to support the Great Southern Trail will be taken up in Ardagh-Carrigkerry parish this weekend, April 25-26.

"Therefore anyone who would like to help in Ardagh-Carrigkerry could take the plunge and start by offering to assist at this weekend's collection," said Mr O'Mahony. Our local contact is Tom at 085 1510095."

Mr O'Mahony again warned that the trail is being abused by a small minority: "All walkers and cyclists are welcome but we again ask horse owners to refrain from using an amenity which is not designed for them. Indentations in the surface from horses' hooves create difficulties for users with disabilities and we request consideration to be shown."
