Town tunes up to celebrate 15th Bank Holiday festival

WITH just a week to go to the Fleadh by the Feale at Abbeyfeale, entries are being processed and applications for masterclass places are being worked on.

This, the 15th such event is always held on May Bank Holiday weekend. Indeed it was the creation of the May Bank Holiday which prompted the fleadh in the first place.

Maureen Murphy, secretary, explained that Abbeyfeale realised that the bank holiday would encourage tourism into Kerry and the fleadh was created to take advantage of that fact.

From the beginning it was more successful than anyone had anticipated and it has since grown to become one of the most popular festivals in Munster and a milestone to mark the start of summer.

The format is now a proven success, with community and youngsters' events as well as classes building up to the headline concert.

Thursday evening is warming-up time, with arriving musicians gathering in various venues around the town.

The first competitions are the street busking contests, with groups numbering from three to six competing in a variety of age categories.

Saturday is masterclass day for improvers and advanced performers (not suitable for beginners) in concertina, flute, banjo, accordion, fiddle, singing and, for the second year, sean nos dancing.

There will be traditional entertainment in the Square on Saturday evening with Templeglantine Comhaltas and the all-female group, Maids of Erin, as well as sessions in many of the town's bars and lounges.

Sunday will start indoors when Daisy Keane hosts a storytelling session at the Convent Secondary School while, across the Feale at Fr Casey's GAA pavilion, there will be a ceili mor in association with West Limerick 102.

Traditional outdoor entertainment will begin at 3.30 from the platform in the Square and this will include the junior bones playing competition.

The open air entertainment will continue from 7.30 with Scoil Mhuire and Tournafulla Comhalts taking the stage and this will be followed by the All Ireland Senior Bone Playing Competition.

But Sunday night is also the night for the headline concert and this year, back by public demand after an absence, are Four Men and a Dog.

Booking may be made with Maureen Murphy on 086 3265762.
