Streets to swell with pride
LIMERICK'S streets will be alive with colour and the celebration of diversity this September as a Gay Pride parade takes to the streets for the third year in a row.
Limerick Pride 2009 was launched this week and some 3,000 people are expected to flock to the city to take part in the week-long programme of activities.
The festival has grown from year to year, with last year's 'I Love Limerick' theme seeing hundreds take part in the city parade and the many events that took place. As with every year, the festival is stressing that it is a "chance for everyone to celebrate diversity".
"Gay culture has really contributed to the life of Limerick through art, music, dance and pure energy," said Pride chairperson Paddy Doyle.
There will be a full programme of diverse events taking place throughout the week, which runs from September 13-20 and will include performances by the Kylie Experience, as well as Mr Gay Limerick, a mardi-gras party, Bottom Dog Theatre Company's performance of Language Unbecoming A Lady at the Belltable and an interactive performance of the Rocky Horror Show at Centrespace Studios.
Garryowen's Lesley-Ann Halvey of Black Daisy, Ireland's Eurovision entry, whose band will also perform as part of the festival, said she was delighted to be taking part.
"t's the first time the band has performed in Limerick since Eurovision and I'm really excited about playing my home town - we're going to put on an unforgettable show," she said.
Mayor Kiely said the week was about celebrating openness, diversity and fun.
"It is my wish for Limerick to be an inclusive city that cherishes the many diverse communities living in the Mid-West," said Cllr Kiely.
