'Stay away from drugs' warns Phil Lynott's mum

"LOVE Philip, but don't love his lifestyle," was the message proclaimed by Philomena Lynott, mother of the late musician and songwriter, Phil Lynott, in Newcastle West at the weekend.

Ms Lynott was in the town to unveil a wall of framed memorabilia dedicated to Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy at Seamus Clery's bar at South Quay.

Mr Cleary's

premises already has a

collection of artefacts celebrating

the life and art

of another famous musician,

Rory Gallagher.

"It is amazing how

many people still love

Philip," Ms Lynott told

the Limerick Leader.

"There is a bar in Cork

called Lizzy's, with photographs

and the like and

the same at Bodhran. The

same in England. In Los

Angeles there is even a

man who has turned his

garage into a shrine to

Philip."

She said that fans in

Toronto had spontaneously

raised the money

for the statue to Phil

Lynott which now stands

in the centre of Dublin.

Phil Lynott died of the

effects of drug abuse in

1986 at the age of just 36.

"Drugs are out there

killing all our young people,"

said Ms Lynott. "I

have devoted myself to

getting that message

across and I visit schools

to tell the young people

what happened to Philip."

Last Saturday night's

well-attended ceremony

at Clery's was facilitated

by Newcastle West musician

Jimmy "Chops",

with Eddie Guiry and

Anika Bloom.

"Phil Lynott has been

one of my idols all my

life," said proprietor, Seamus

Cleary. "I had always

wanted to do something

to celebrate the life of so

brilliant a musician and

songwriter. I am

immensely grateful that

Philomena, his mother,

found time to officially

unveil our display."
