Special Olympics helpers sought in Limerick

THE organisers of the upcoming Special Olympics, which are to be held in Limerick next summer, are seeking volunteers to help with the advance planning of the games.

The 2010 Special Olympics Ireland Games will take place in Limerick next June, with 1,900 athletes from around the world participating in 13 sports in venues all over Limerick.

The organisers are inviting people interested in volunteering for the planning of the games to attend one of several upcoming information evenings.

"We need a total of 3,500 volunteers from Limerick and the surrounding areas, some in advance and some for the actual five days of the games," explained Anne-Marie Butler of Special Olympics Ireland.

"We will be providing training in Limerick and volunteering is open to everyone. We will be hosting information sessions in the coming days and weeks to provide general information to those interested in getting involved in advance.

"People can decide what are they might be interested in and there will be a wide range of areas they can get involved in – there is something for everyone," said Anne-Marie.

While some volunteers are needed now to begin planning the events, more will be required in January to work for the five days of the games in June.

"We need people now who can commit a few hours a week. It will be exciting and good fun and provide people with an opportunity to meet new people," she said.

Volunteer information sessions will take place in the Jean Monnet Theatre, Main University Building, University of Limerick, this Saturday, 10.30am; next Monday, 7pm, and on Saturday, November 28, 10.30am and 1.30pm.
