Soccer sixes world cup is kicked off

PEOPLE of all ages and nationalities came together at Crescent College for the launch of the inaugural Limerick Sixes Soccer World Cup.

The six-a-side tournament will take place on Saturday, September 25 between 11am-7pm in the grounds of the Crescent Comprehensive School. A women's soccer tournament will also take place on that day, showcasing some of the region's best footballing talent.

This new annual event will seek to promote the role of sport – particularly soccer – in contributing to integration in the Mid-West. The festival also creates an opportunity to celebrate the growing cultural diversity in Limerick through food, music and dance.

The tournament is open to everyone, Irish natives and non-nationals alike, and organiser Eugene Quinn of the Jesuit Refugee Service Ireland, said: "We want to encourage men and women from local and migrant communities to participate in soccer in Limerick and to develop a sustainable annual intercultural football event in the region.

"We also hope that the event will be a fantastic day out with a great programme of both sporting and intercultural family friendly entertainment," he added.

The Limerick Sixes Soccer World Cup will consist of all 32 team names which competed at the recent FIFA World Cup. A random draw will allocate each team name to the competitors, while the women's tournament will contain each of the team names of the FIFA World Cup's Quarter Finalists.

Each of the teams in the Sixes tournament will receive a national team shirt of their allocated country which will be their playing colours for the duration of the tournament.
