Six months jail sentence for teen with brain injury

A TEENAGER who sustained permanent brain injuries in an horrific road crash on the outskirts of the city last year received a six month jail sentence when he appeared in court on Thursday.

Jamie Marshall, 19, of Altimira Terrace, Thomondgate, appeared before Limerick District Court after he was charged in relation to the single-vehicle crash, which happened at Woodcock Hill in the early hours of August 19, 2008.

Mr Marshall, who was disqualified from driving at the time, pleaded guilty to a total of six charges including dangerous driving on the date in question.

Judge Tom O'Donnell was told the accused had been driving at "considerable speed" and that a brick wall had been completely demolished in the impact.

"He had to be cut of the car and he was taken to Cork University Hospital where he was treated for serious head injuries and his life was in danger for a considerable time afterwards," said Insp Pat Connolly, Henry Street, who added that the three other occupants of the car had escaped uninjured.

Solicitor Chris Lynch, said his client had been "spiralling out of control" in the months prior to the crash but that he had not come to garda attention since.

"He sustained extremely serious injuries to his head and he has a permanent brain injury and he will be a considerable burden on his parents for some time," he said stating his client was discharged from hospital two months after the crash.

Imposing sentence Judge O'Donnell said the case was "one of the more difficult" he had come across and he said it was clear the accused had been traveling at a "colossal speed" at the time of the crash. He imposed a six-month jail sentence on the defendant but he ordered that the sentence should not begin until February 19 next.

He imposed three other six month sentences to run concurrently on Mr Marshall in relation to a "litany" of other offences which he committed last year in the months prior to the crash.

Those offences related to a number of break-ins at private homes and business premises on the northside of the city and to an armed robbery at Shell, Thomondate two days prior to the crash.
