Sinn Fein protest over 'decay' of Nicholas Street
SINN Fein last night held a protest on Nicholas Street, in a bid to highlight the continuing decay of the area and to encourage immediate action to be taken by Limerick City Council.
Tom Collopy, Sinn Fein's East Ward Representative, has called for immediate action to be taken to fix the "deplorable state of disrepair" that the street has fallen into.
"It is obvious that there are far too many derelict and abandoned buildings all along the street. Many of these buildings are unsafe and pose a real danger to the general public. Not only are they unsafe they are also an embarrassment as many tourists use this street," he said
The poor condition of Nicholas Street became a talking point in July, when the shop front of a vacant property collapsed onto the footpath on Friday, August 13.
Speaking after the incident, Independent Councillor John Gilligan said that it was "a miracle" that nobody was hurt when part of the facade of the property came crashing down on the path.
Cllr Gilligan, who was working across the road from the property when it happened, also said that had the incident happened in September, when schoolchildren would be passing, a someone could have been killed. "We are very fortunate in that we could have had a fatality on our hands if this had happened in a month's time.
"At that time of the morning, that street is crowded with young children going into Treacy's shop and on their way to school," he said.
