SHOOTING, BOMB FUEL FEUD FEARS - By CLODAGH O'LEARY
THERE were new fears this Tuesday of an escalation of the city's ongoing feud following revelations of a shooting and the discovery of an explosive device in the Moyross area.
Gardai in the city had a busy weekend following a spate of violent feud-related incidents on the city's northside.
Detectives carried out searches of houses in the Moyross area and found a pipe-bomb and balaclavas in the back garden of a house in Pineview Gardens shortly after 3pm on Saturday. The Army Bomb Disposal Unit were called from Cork to dismantle the pipe-bomb, and took the device to their lab in Collins Barracks to have it analysed.
Two men were questioned in Henry Street Garda Station under the Offences Against the State Act but were released yesterday afternoon without charge.
And gardai at Mayorstone are this Tuesday continuing their investigation into the shooting of Liam Kelly, brother of 19-year-old murder victim Aidan Kelly, who was shot dead in Clare last May.
Mr Kelly 18, was sitting in a car in Pineview Gardens on Friday night with a female companion when he was shot three times in the leg at about 8.45. The female driver was not injured in the incident.
Mr Kelly was rushed to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital where his injuries were described as "not life-threatening". His condition is said to be stable.
A garda spokesman said this Tuesday that Mayorstone gardai were continuing their investigations into the feud-related incident.
"This is an open and ongoing investigation. We would ask anyone with information on the incident to come forward," the Garda spokesman said.
Gardai believe that both the shooting and the discovery of the pipebomb incidents are linked to the ongoing feud.
Also on Saturday afternoon, Liam Keane, nephew of slain crime boss Kieran, was along with a man in his 30s, arrested for public order offences after they were seen acting suspiciously near a shop in the vicinity of Pineview Gardens on Saturday afternoon. They were later released without charge.
And in a unrelated act of violence in the Limerick area over the weekend, two men were injured and two arrested after a row broke out at a house party in Castleconnell, involving deadly samurai swords.
It is understood that the argument started at a house at Daly's Cross shortly after 9pm on Thursday night. The fight broke out onto the main N7, and shocked motorists were confronted with the scene of men fighting with what were believed to be samurai swords.
Two men were arrested by gardai and were taken to Henry Street Garda Station. They were released on Friday evening without charge. Two other men were brought to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital but their injuries were not life-threatening.
