Shock in Limerick following first murder of 2012

The scene where the body of Ger McMahon was found

The scene where the body of Ger McMahon was found

THE FIRST murder investigation of the year in Limerick has been launched by gardai in the city, following the fatal stabbing of 43 year-old man in the early hours of this Wednesday morning.

Gardai at Roxboro garda station say no weapon had been found and no arrests have been made. A number of lines of enquiry are being followed.

Inspector Tom O’Connor, Roxboro, who is leading the investigation along with Superintendent John Scanlan, said they are keeping “an open mind” in relation to the case.

A number of theories regarding the motive of the attack have been put forward, some in relation to the criminal background of the deceased man. Others have speculated that a rivalry erupted between the victim and another man over a love interest, however gardai again stressed they are following a number of leads.

The victim from nearby Raheen Square has been named locally as Ger McMahon. He was found with multiple stab wounds to his upper body at about 12.30am on steps outside a house on Lenihan Avenue in the city. It is believed he was fleeing his attacker when he collapsed on the steps.

The deceased was not married, but was known to gardai through multiple court appearances on a variety of offences, including burglary, criminal damage and other minor offences.

It is understood he comes from a large family, with as many as 20 siblings.

The ambulance service alerted gardaí after he was found outside the house in the Ballinacurra Weston area of the city.

He was taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead around 1.30am. A post mortem is to be carried out by the State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy.

The area where he was found was sealed off and a team from the Garda Technical Bureau carried out a forensic examination of the scene.

Gardai have also made a number of house to house inquiries in the area and are keen to establish any witnesses in the case.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Roxboro Road on 061 214340 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.

Mayor of Limerick, Fine Gael councillor Jim Long, who also knew the dead man and his family, has made a direct appeal to those responsible to come forward and assist gardaí in their investigation.

The mayor said the murder will be “a serious blow to the area”, which has “shocked” residents.

its good to see that they (the gardai)are back in proper uniform and not the other clothes worn when arresting lonely old men, and hanging them over hot coals

Yep, thanks to the regeneration the worst of Limerick's criminal skobes are being sponsored to spread their wings...all Ireland can experience their unique culture. Ask the people of Abbeyfeale, Ardagh, Fedamore, Murroe, Glin about their new neighbours.

Well, D Power, you are right about that. Being a Limerick man, I hate to see these things going on there. Weak law enforcement and a very weak and liberal judicial system is doing in the country.

This is happening all over the country. There was a murder down the road in Clonmel Co.Tipperary also yesterday. In Waterford recently there was 3 serious stabbing incidents in 10 days (one resulting in death). This is NOT just a Limerick problem. Stabbings are commonplace in every town and city in Ireland.

Surprise, surprise. Aren't we all shocked! Whoever did this no doubt has a "rap sheet" the length of your arm. Same old story over and over again. Certainly not an altar boy suddenly gone wrong....
