Shannon Development wants urgent action on single authority for Limerick
SHANNON Development has called for the recommendations of the Limerick Local Government Committee to be acted upon quickly.
The report of the group - chaired by Denis Brosnan and including Limerick accountant Maurice Carr - calls for a single local authority, with an enlarged city boundary bringing in the Clare estates of Westbury and Shannon Banks.
Now, chief executive of the development agency, Dr Vincent Cunnane wants to see the recommendations of the five-man group brought in without delay.
As part of its submission to the local government committee, Shannon Development called for a city boundary extension, and a single local authority, exactly what Mr Brosnan is proposing.
Dr Cunnane - a member of the jobs task force - said: "In our submission to, and meeting with, the Limerick Local Government Committee, we emphasised that the long term economic development of the Limerick / Shannon Gateway, driven by a strong Limerick City, is vital to the Shannon Region's future."
The Donegal-born head of Shannon Development added: "(We] strongly believe that the long term economic development prospects of the Shannon Region are best served by having Limerick City as a strong, vibrant metropolitan core fulfilling its potential as the economic driving force of the Region over the next twenty to thirty years. We view the recommendations in this report as an important step in achieving that."
