Ryanair warns of jobs and route cuts

RYANAIR may slash services from Shannon Airport as soon as next year, according to reports this morning.

Chief executive Michael O'Leary had warned last week that because the €10 travel tax introduced in the budget "effectively doubled" many winter fares at Shannon, there would be "tumbleweed rolling down the runways at Shannon" by winter of next year.

And according to reports this Tuesday, Mr O'Leary has said the airline could reduce the number of aircraft it bases at Shannon from four to one in 2009, reducing the number of passengers it brings through the airport from two million down to 750,000. There would also be a loss of 100 jobs at the airline.

A reduction in business of this order could devastate Shannon airport, where 60 per cent of the total business is accounted for by Ryanair.

An airport spokesman said last week that the current agreement with Ryanair had two years to run and the airport was working on continuing the relationship.
