Romanian women ordered to stay away from parts of Limerick city after prostitution charge

TWO Romanian women have been ordered to stay away from a large part of the city centre after they appeared in court charged with directing and controlling the activities of a number of prostitutes for the purpose of financial gain.

The women were arrested last Thursday night following a lengthy garda investigation targeting the activities of known prostitutes who are operating in the city centre. The pair appeared in court last Friday morning.

Ramona Schein, 18, of the Laurels, Dooradoyle and Florina Avram, 31, with an address at Main Street, Patrickswell are each charged under Section 9 of Sexual Offences Act. It is alleged that the offences happened in the Hartstonge Street, Pery Square, Catherine Street and Catherine Place areas on various dates between May 20 and August 22 this year.

The court was told that neither of the defendants made any reply when they were formally charged at Roxboro Garda Station and Insp Luke Conlon said gardai were not opposing a bail application which was made by solicitor Muiris Gavin on behalf of the defendants.

Both Ms Schein and Ms Avram were granted bail on condition they surrender their passports to gardai and sign on at their local garda stations three times a week.

In addition each of them have been ordered to stay away from Hartstonge Street, Pery Square, Catherine Street and Catherine Place as a condition of their bail.

Judge Tom O'Donnell also ordered each of defendants not to associate with known prostitutes or with each other. They must also live at their home addresses pending their next court appearance. The judge said he was reserving his position regarding an application for free legal aid because of the penalties that apply in such cases.

The defendants were released on their own bond of €200 and they are due to appear in court again on October 1 next.
