Revealed: the five bands battling it out for Bob Dylan support slot

THE LIMERICK Chronicle, sister paper of the Leader, today exclusively reveals the five acts shortlisted for the chance to share the stage with Bob Dylan at his Thomond Park on July 4.

They are, in no particular order:

- Windings

- Animal Beats

- Last Days of Death Country

- Nick Carswell and the Elective Orchestra

- Brendan Markham and band

The five lucky acts will go head-to-head in a winner takes all showdown in Dolan's Warehouse for the prized support slot on the Dylan bill, which also includes David Gray, Seasick Steve and Alabama 3.

Mick Dolan, who along with a number of others, including the Limerick Chronicle, selected the five shortlisted acts, said the quality of the Limerick music scene was "fantastic".

"The standard that is out there meant that it was really hard to pick just five bands in the end, that is the reality," said Mick.

Concert promoter Peter Aiken, who asked Mick Dolan, the Limerick Chronicle and Limerick's Live 95FM to select the act to play with Dylan, said that the legendary American icon had personally requested that a local band open the show - "a good band", he stated.

Mr Aiken also noted that an unheard of band had opened for Pink a number of years, and had subsequently gone on to stardom.

"One year we had an unheard of band to support Pink - the Coronas, and she took them on a world tour, she loved them. Dylan will be listening, so who knows? It will be good, and we are looking forward to it," said Mr Aiken.
