Revamped power station will cut emissions by half

THE new owners of Tarbert generating station, the Spanish energy giant Endesa, have announced that emissions from the stacks will be reduced to less than half the present output as soon as the plant is converted from heavy oil to natural gas.

The chairman of Shannon Development, Cllr John Brassil, who is also a county councillor for the Tarbert and Ballylongford area, said that the announcement was a further sign that the LNG development was already reaping positive results.

The decision will be good for the environment and for the general wellbeing of everyone living in the vicinity of the plant, said Mr Brassil.

"This is also an indication that, despite the recession, the company is committed to redeveloping Tarbert power station, and in the process generate much needed jobs and revenue to the local economy," he said.

"The Shannon LNG gas terminal on the Ballylongford landbank is going to continue to put in motion more projects which will be of immense importance to everyone in north Kerry," said Cllr Brassil.

He said that the work that will take place to build the LNG facility and to redevelop the Tarbert power station will create an enormous number of jobs in the construction phase and afterwards, with more permanent jobs for Endesa when running the power station.
