Rescheduled fundraising walk for respite centre on this weekend
THE fifth annual sponsored walk in aid of Dromcollogher Respite Care Centre will take place this Sunday.
The walk was deferred to take account of last weekend's All-Ireland club football semi-final.
This year's walk will again be of five miles duration and will commence and end at the centre, with refreshments. The walk will be fully stewarded. It is expected that at least €4,000 will be raised again this year.
The respite centre, now in its seventh year, gives breaks of two or three weeks to lift the pressure from home carers and to give a change of surroundings to the cared for. There are 20 beds in the centre, which was designed as Ireland's first respite unit not attached to any other nursing home of medical facility. The aim of the centre is to keep charges to a minimum, typically being the equivalent of a State pension or other welfare receipt.
Sr Bridie O'Sullivan of the Sisters of St Joseph operates with a staff of about 30, which includes nurses, trained carers and catering and house staff. The voluntary committee which established the centre is chaired by Seamus Stack.
It is expected that about 60 people will walk in this Sunday's fundraiser.
