Quinlivan asks if other gardai have leaked information
SINN Fein councillor Maurice Quinlivan, who was at the centre of the Willie O'Dea controversy, has publicly asked a Garda superintendent if there had been any other incidents of gardai in Limerick allegedly passing on information to politicians.
At a meeting of the city's Joint Policing Committee, Cllr Quinlivan referred to claims made in the Dail last month by the former Minister for Defence that he had received information from a garda in relation to a brothel which was being operated at Clancy Strand.
"Is this unusual? Have there been any reports of gardai giving information to politicians in the past in the Limerick area? Have there been any investigations? Have there been any convictions?" he asked.
Supt Frank O'Brien, Henry Street, said he was not in a position to comment on the matter as Chief Supt Michael Finn from Cork had been appointed by Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy to investigate certain allegations surrounding the events which ultimately led to the resignation of Willie O'Dea.
Last December, Cllr Quinlivan settled a defamation case he had initiated against the Limerick East polltopper following comments he made last March during an interview with Limerick Leader journalist Mike Dwane.
