Prostitutes return to Limerick city despite garda crack down

A GANG of “aggressive” prostitutes have been driven from the streets of Limerick in recent days following another garda crackdown.

Following the recent impact of Operation Freewheel, which saw a number of men from County Limerick charged with soliciting prostitutes, the vice trade had taken a hammering in the city.

But in the last week a new and more overt group of prostitutes have returned to the city’s streets, and were more aggressive, “bolder and more forward” than ever before, according to business owners in the area.

Shop owner Shane Gleeson confirmed to the Limerick Leader: “There is definitely a group of them back.

“They reappeared in the last week, that is when they have been most visible. They seem to be a completely different gang and if anything, they are more aggressive than the previous crowd. They are hassling people”.

He added that the group of prostitutes - including one who was brazenly parading in illuminous orange boots - were “a completely different gang than before, bolder, noisier, more forward - they are exceptionally forward”.

However, Mr Gleeson, whose family have operated Gleeson’s Shop in the city for four generations, paid tribute to the quick actions of local gardai, who he said “have been fantastic” in dealing with the problem.

Superintendent Frank O’Brien, Henry Street station, recently said in the aftermath of Operation Freewheel that the issue of tackling prostitution in Limerick would remain an ongoing one and was a priority of gardai, despite not having “the luxury” of a unit dedicated specifically to tackling it.

Ah Clay, you're innocent. He'd flash the warrant card and expect a freebie.

'Tourists with bad dress sense' - I love it!!! That's brilliant!! And as for the Mayor getting his knickers in a twist - he has proved here on this forum that he's an illiterate ommadawn, I doubt that anybody in Limerick takes any notice of his fulminations, he has reduced the office of mayor to a clown's role. the sooner we get the combined authority with one of the County Limerick councillors as first citizen the better, idiots like Schlong won't know what hits them when they'll come up against real politicians.

The last time the gardai did this sort of thing our lord mayor was not a happy camper.A more positive angle on this story is that maybe these people are just tourists with bad dress sense, and it is our patriotic duty to make them feel welcome so they will come back again.

More like flogging them over priced coffee and sangers,as well as short changing them as well.Always happens to me in that shop. Why cant both hookers and Gardai, and other social gestapo not come to a compromise on this??Suggest all of the night action and sexual services be moved to a part of Limerick that is non residential.IE maybe the Dock road area again and turn that into the red light zone.Thussly not bothering the holey Janes and Joes ,if the girls are working down in an industrial area??Thats now the standard in most European cities.

Maybe he has a 'thing' about orange luminous boots - or maybe he's just selling coffee and doughnuts to the hacks in a nearby building ;-)

Shane Gleeson seems awfully fixated on these prostitutes. This is the 3rd or 4th time he's in the papers talking about it. Hmmm. . .

Well, that simplifies things greatly. If they have orange "illuminous" boots, they're real hookers. If they have luminous jackets, they're bangardai out to catch the unwary. With all the serious crime in Limerick, it's unbelievable that the Gardai consider this a priority as the article describes. That article needs editing anyway. How can a "new" group be said to "return"? Paddymog
