Prosecutions likely as Limerick City Council clamps down on ‘smoky’ coal sales
Legal action is likely to be initiated over the continuing sale of smoky coal in the city
LEGAL action is likely to be initiated following an operation targeting the illegal sale of “smoky” coal in the city.
New laws were introduced late last year and Limerick City Council says it is leading a multi- agency ‘on-street’ investigation into the sale and distribution of household coal in the city.
Over the past few weeks, a number of ‘bellmen’ who were observed distributing coal were interviewed by staff from the local authority.
Customs officers and inspectors from the Revenue Commissioners and the Department of Social Protection were also involved as were staff from Limerick County Council and Clare County Council.
Limerick City Council is reiterating that the “selling, marketing, distribution and burning” of bituminous (smoky) coal is an offence in the city and surrounding hinterland.
“On foot of these interviews, it is expected that enforcement action will be instigated in a number of cases, by the relevant agency,” said a spokesperson for the local authority.
