President to mark village's Tidy Town's triumph

Tidy Towns committee members in Emly will present a bouquet to President Mary McAleese on her visit to the village this Saturday when the president will unveil a plaque outside Duhig House beside St Ailbe's Church, to celebrate Emly's victory in the National Tidy Towns Competition 2009.

The celebrations will start in the church car park at 11.30am with entertainment provided by the CJ Kickham Brass and Reed Band. President McAleese arrives at noon.

Cian Quish and Stephen Deere from the Tidy Towns junior committee will make a floral presentation to the President.

She will be greeted by Emly Tidy Towns committee members, residents and delegates from South Tipperary County Council and the Department of the Environment.

Sharon Cunningham, Emly Tidy Town's chairwoman, said everyone in the community was invited to attend their day of celebration.

"I am delighted for the people of Emly to be honoured with this presidential visit. It was through the hard work and dedication of the community that we achieved the national award last year. The residents, clubs, businesses and school have really pulled together as a community and have made a bigger effort this year. It's with a great sense of pride that we welcome President McAleese to Emly," said Ms Cunningham.

Emly scored 305 marks out of a possible 400 to become Ireland's Tidiest Town 2009.

Up against 720 entries from towns and villages all over the country, the village scooped an impressive five awards, including National Award Winner, Ireland's Tidiest Village Award, a Gold Medal Award for Best in their Category, a South-East Regional Award and a Best in County Award.

Along with the speeches, Emly National School children will give the president a guard of honour and their band will entertain her.

After unveiling the plaque and mingling with locals, Mrs McAleese is set to depart at 12.45pm.
