President leads tributes following death of Limerick climber
President Mary McAleese is leading the tributes to County Limerick climber, Gerard McDonnell, after his family confirmed he died during his descent from the summit of K2.
It is believed the 37 year old engineer, who is from Kilcornan, became trapped as he was making his way from the summit of the world's second highest mountain.
On Friday he became the first ever Irish person to reach the summit of the mountain, which is regarded as the most dangerous mountain in the world.
Speaking on behalf of Gerard's family his brother-in-law, Damien O'Brien said: "We are extremely proud of the many heroic and brave achievements of our son and brother Gerard."
He added: "The last few days have been a roller coaster of emotions as we celebrated with joy his historic achievment and now we must try to come to terms with the untimely loss of a great son, brother and friend."
President McAleese, who met Mr McDonnell earlier this year, has conveyed her sympathies to his family. "Following so closely on their righteous pride, and that of the country, at Gerard becoming the first Irish person to scale K2, it is truly heartbreaking that they must now contemplate the loss of a beloved son and brother," she said.
Explorer, Pat Falvey who climbed Mount Everest with Gerard McDonnell in 2003 said: "It is total and utter shock and every time a friend passes away like this it is just numbing."
Prayers were said for Gerard Mcdonnell at masses across West Limerick at the weekend and plans will be finalised in the coming days for a memorial mass in Kilcornan.
