Plans in place for private Limerick hospital

DEVELOPERS behind a proposed private 92-bed hospital for the Dock Road are seeking a time extension to build the facility.
Plans due to be lodged with Limerick County Council show that the Limerick Private Hospital company, backed by Blackberry Park Developments, are seeking full planning permission for the construction of a private hospital.
They have been forced to seek this, because their previous licence to build at the Blackberry Park industrial area expired last year.
Under local authority rules, a developer has five years from when planning permission was given - in this case 2007 - to build.
It is unclear whether the project will go ahead in the short to medium term, however, as Shay Sweeney, the developer behind the scheme, was unavailable for comment.
The ambitious plans would have seen a four-floor 92-bed hospital built.
It would have seen dedicated suites for single day procedures, four fully equipped operating theatres, two minor theatres, multiple high-dependency rooms, and 65 extra private, en-suite bedrooms.
The hospital would also have its own physiotherapy, laboratory and pharmacy facilities.
At the time, it was claimed the project would cost upwards of €100m, and would create 300 jobs.
The new plans provide for a five-floor hospital, over three levels of basement car parking. There would be an accident and emergency unit, a radiology site, as well as theatre suites.
Some 257 car parking spaces are expected from the development.
Local Fine Gael councillor Richard Butler welcomed the renewal of planning permission.
“It would be great to see. Hopefully it will go ahead in the near future. It will give people a choice between whether they want to use a private hospital, or whether they want to use the public facilities at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital,” he told the Limerick Leader.
