Out of control teen is jailed for a year
AN "out of control" teenager, who threw a concrete block through the window of a car with two young children inside, was yesterday jailed for 12 months.
At Limerick Children's Court the 17 year old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to four charges relating the incident, which happened in the car park of St Enda's School, Southill on January 11, last.
Judge Tom O'Donnell was told the children, who were aged 9 and 11, had been left in the car by their mother when the accused teenager approached the vehicle.
"He signalled to one of the children to open the door and when they refused he threw a concrete block through the window spraying the children with glass," said Insp Seamus Nolan, who added that the accused then proceeded to steal a wallet from the car, which contained €90 in cash and cheques to the value of €1,080.
Judge O'Donnell said the incident was "very disturbing" and he said it must have been an extremely frightening experience for both the children and their mother.
During the same court sitting the defendant also pleaded guilty to another 16 charges relating to offences, which all occurred between July and December 2007.
Solicitor John Devane, said his client had come under the influence of older peers and he said he was addicted to tablets and drink and that he was "out of his head" when he committed all of the offences.
Judge O'Donnell said: "The multiplicity of charges amassed by this young man is stunning and it is clear he is completely out of control and I am appalled by his cold and calculated modus operandi."
In sentencing the teenager he added: "Society needs to be protected and deserves to be protected from this young man." The judge imposed a number of six month jail sentences to run consecutively and he also disqualified the young man from driving for the next five years.
