O'Donovan throws his hat into Dail race

THE date of the next general election may still just be the subject of speculation, but Newcastle West-based councillor Patrick O'Donovan has already confirmed that he intends to run for a seat in the Dail.

The 32-year-old teacher, who was first elected to Limerick County Council in 2004, said that he feels he is a person who can end "nudge and wink politics" and provide a "strong, community-focused voice for the people of Limerick."

And county councillor for the Kilmallock electoral area, Bill O'Donnell has also signalled his intention to also run in the next general election.

When contacted by the Limerick Leader this week, the 42-year-old solicitor said that if, within the next four and a half years, the country finds itself facing a general election he would certainly intend putting his name forward. Cllr O'Donovan's move has been anticipated since he unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the Seanad in 2007.

He informed the local Fine Gael organisation this Monday that he will be seeking their support in nominating him to contest the three-seat Limerick constituency if and when an election is called. "It's always been my ambition," he told the Limerick Leader.

"People have said that as there's been a renewed programme for government, there won't be a general election. I don't think that's the case at all. There's massive dissatisfaction with the Government and the situation this country is in.

"Fianna Fail and the Greens are only interested in self-preservation, and they probably think they're going to survive now. But they're dependent on a volatile coalition of Independents, and who knows how they're going to react to the cuts the Government are looking to implement."

Cllr O'Donovan's move comes as local Fine Gael members begin planning for an election that will likely return the party to government for the first time in more than a decade. Cllr O'Donovan's party colleague, newlyelected councillor Bill O'Donnell, has this week also signalled his intention to contest the Fine Gael nomination. Under the recent changes to Limerick's electoral constituencies, there will be three seats available in the new Limerick
