O'Donovan demands answers to the 'huge toll of job losses'
THE haemorrhage of jobs which has taken place in west Limerick over the last few years has taken a huge toll on the community, according to Cllr Patrick O'Donovan.
And, said the FG representative, people needed to know exactly how much worse the situation could get and what plans that Government has to deal with the problem. He also cautioned that current Government policies will force more people off the land.
Speaking at the 75th Fine Gael Ard Fheis at City West, Cllr O'Donovan said that west Limerick had been left voiceless in the current administration and the effects of this were now taking its toll.
He added that the carve-up and sacrifice of Limerick's Dil constituencies to appease Kerry is an affront to democracy, an attempt to disenfranchise the people of west Limerick and would need to be reversed by a new government.
Cllr O'Donovan said that recent cutbacks in education were having a major impact and he added that no party could stand over cuts aimed at vulnerable children with learning difficulties.
He urged the Fine Gael spokesperson on education to continue the campaign for their reversal.
"Children and the less well-off have not caused the economic recession and they should not be made pay for it in this way," he told delegates.
Cllr O'Donovan also urged his party to ensure that additional farm inspections being proposed by the current government be opposed.
"It is absolutely scandalous that the Government is forcing the local authorities to increase the number of farm inspections in a bid to reduce the single farm payment and reduce farm incomes happy to strangle existing farmers with red tape and form filling, which will have the net result of more farmers leaving the land."
