Newport gun victim is mourned at funeral in Limerick city
HEARTBREAKING tributes were paid to a Limerickman who tragically shot himself in Newport after firing at two gardai at his funeral mass in Limerick at the weekend.
Hundreds of people attended the funeral mass of father-of-one Anthony McMahon, 44, from Janesboro, in Our Lady of Peace church last Saturday.
Parish priest, Fr Pat O’Sullivan, said the community had been shocked and saddened by the nature of his passing.
The congregation was told Mr McMahon “wasn’t feeling so well” in the days leading up to his death, as it’s understood the taxi driver and licensed gunman had been troubled by an assault charge which was looming.
The dead man’s niece, Clodagh O’Flynn, thanked all who supported their family during “a very difficult week”. She said the only person Anthony went out to harm last Monday was himself.
It has since emerged that a suicide note was left in his clothing in the family home in Rearcross, Tipperary, that evening, before he opened fire on two garda officers with a shotgun and a rifle, and then turned the gun on himself.
Ms O’Flynn said the family were comforted by the large attendance at his removal and funeral, which she said “bears testament to how much he was respected and loved – not just by us, but everyone who knew the real Anthony.”
