New plan to combat Limerick CCTV vandals
CCTV cameras in Southill could have to be wired underground to prevent vandals from destroying cameras and possible evidence in criminal proceedings.
A total of seven out of 29 cameras in Southill have now been destroyed, and a spokesperson for the Southside Regeneration Agency said these will not be replaced until more secure ways of erecting cameras can be established.
"If we do the same again they will just be vandalised, so we are looking at strengthening the equipment. There are two main ways we can go about this - having concrete cellars for underground wiring or strengthening the poles, so that the wiring is actually installed through them," said the spokesperson.
He added that in recent months it has been a case of electrical boxes and flag poles being vandalised - as opposed to the actual cameras as they are at a height beyond reach. "If any of these boxes are interfered with, it could take out two or three cameras," added the spokesperson.
Experts are now examining the best possible security system for Southill, and consultation will also be sought with Limerick City Council, and the ESB, who own the flag poles.
The strengthened pillars are estimated to cost €4,000 per pole, but costings have not yet been made available to the regeneration agency in relation to underground wiring.
