Mayor confident Limerick's new Garda boss will take a hand-ons approach
MAYOR Kevin Kiely says he believes that Limerick's new Garda chief superintendent David Sheahan will have a hands-on approach in his role as head of the Limerick Garda Division.
Chief Supt Sheahan, who previously served as superintendent at Roxboro Garda station during the mid-2000s, was based in Thurles before being appointed as head of the Limerick division by Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy.
The Waterford native took up the role of chief superintendent last month following the retirement of Chief Supt Gerry Mahon late last year.
Mayor Kiely met Chief Supt Sheahan at the weekend and said he had the fullest of confidence in him.
"He is an excellent policeman and he will have a hands-on approach. I am confident that he will not be a nine-to-five chief superintendent.
"I have no doubt that his presence will be felt in a major way at Garda stations across the city," said the Mayor.
The chairman of the city's joint policing committee, Cllr Michael Hourigan, and deputy city manager Kieran Lehane also attended the meeting in Henry Street Garda station.
"It was basically just a meeting to introduce ourselves to him and to welcome him to Limerick, but we did speak about crime and we did say that there is a need for a much more visible Garda presence in the city centre," Mayor Kiely said.
He added that he also called for the introduction of a special Garda operation targeting teenagers who engage in anti-social behaviour.
According to the most recent crime figures, Chief Supt Sheahan has taken up the role at a time when overall crime levels across the Limerick Garda Division have fallen by over a third compared to last year.
