Lisa Hannigan returns to Limerick
FORGET THE races, those looking for an opportunistic punt should get themselves to the nearest bookies and see what odds Lisa Hannigan is to win the Mercury Music Prize, for which she was nominated last week.
It is not often that Limerick will play host to a Mercury Music Prize nominee, less one as beguiling as Hannigan, who joined the exclusive club of Irish acts nominated for the UK's most prestigious record industry prize.
The Meath chanteuse joins Fionn Regan, Gemma Hayes and U2 - nominated in 1992 for Achtung Baby - as the only previous Irish nominees for the prize, none of whom have been successful.
By all accounts there were cries of "Lisa who?" when her nomination was announced, but it won't be long before this enchanting singer has the British music media under her spell, as she does in Ireland.
Twittering about the nomination, Hannigan said: "I can't transcribe the high-pitched noise of excitement that I'm involuntarily making right now, but '!' sums up my feelings best".
In the year since her excellent debut has been released - by now ratcheting up platinum sales in Ireland - Hannigan has extensively toured the US and the UK, appeared on high-profile shows such as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Colbert Report and Later with Jools Holland, as well as receiving Choice Music Prize and Meteor nominations.
"We have just been gigging the whole time really - that's how we have spent the year and it has been great, we are very lucky to have been able to do it, we have just played and played and played - it has been amazing," Hannigan told the Limerick Chronicle recently.
When the performer takes to the stage in the delightful surroundings of St. John's Church, home to Daghdha Dance Company, those lucky few in attendance might just witness the gig of the year, from a future Mercury winner.
A limited number of tickets remain for the gig, which takes place on Thursday in the Daghdha Space. Tickets are available from Empire Music on O'Connell Street.
