Limerick woman killed in Rome
A 27-year-old woman from County Limerick has been killed in a road crash in the Italian capital, Rome.
Elizabeth Gubbins from Lisnagry and 28 year old Mary Collins from County Kildare were struck by a suspected drunk-driver at a pedestrian crossing near the Vatican.
The two friends, who were on a short holiday in Rome, were returning to their hotel at around 3am when the crash happened.
According to Italian media reports the 32-year-old driver of the Mercedes Car was arrested following the crash and he is said to be under "house arrest".
The Mayor of Rome has issued his condolences to the families of Ms Gubbins and Ms Collins.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has been informed of the tragedy and says it is assisting both families.
Ms Gubbins is survived by her three sisters, her brother and her father.
