Limerick village attracts big names for harvest festival

THE summer festival season is coming to a close, but there is still one more big one to go.

The village of Glenroe is getting ready to host its second harvest festival, and with performances from such high profile artists as Pogues lead singer Shane McGowan and acclaimed accordion player Sharon Shannon, the event is expected to attract visitors from all over Limerick.

"It's a huge event for the parish. Last year was our first year and we just had the weekend of activities, whereas this year we have a week-long schedule. We have raised the bar again this year," said Veronica Farrell, secretary of both the organising committee and the local GAA club.

The Glenroe Harvest Festival 2010 committee has members from all clubs and groups in the village, and has pulled out all the stops to make the festival one to remember. All proceeds will go toward the completion of the GAA facilities.

"The GAA is obviously involved as well as are a number of other organisations and groups. Everything will go back into completing the GAA dressing rooms. They have been under construction for the past 14 months. We are nearly there and are fitting kitchens and things like that in the next week," added Ms Farrell.

To date, a full-size playing pitch and a floodlit juvenile pitch have already been completed.

"Absolutely everything that has been done there has been 100 per cent voluntary – nobody has got one penny. Block by block, bit by bit we are getting there. We have been working mainly on Saturdays," said Veronica.

The highlight of the week will undoubtedly be on Saturday, September 11, when Sharon Shannon and the Big Band will be joined by Shane McGowan. Other crowd-pulling events will be the fashion show in the marquee on Thursday, September 9, and the family fun day on Sunday, September 12, at the GAA ground.
