Limerick sports coach is jailed for child abuse

A LIMERICK man who sexually abused a young boy over a six year period in the 1980s has been sentenced to three years in prison.
Mark Byrne, 47, of the Bower, Clarina, County Limerick pleaded guilty to 12 counts of indecently assaulting the young boy at locations in the Castletroy area of Limerick city on dates been January 1, 1982 and December 31, 1987.
The victim was aged seven when the first of the offences took place.
The court heard he is a former soccer and tennis coach and that he had worked in the retail sector before losing his job when details of the offences emerged.
Judge Carroll Moran was told there were between 25 and 30 incidents involving the victim, who can’t be identified, which ranged from inappropriate touching to performing sexual acts with the boy.
Imposing sentence at Limerick Circuit Court, the judge described the offences as “fairly gross” and he sentenced the accused to three years in prison.
