Limerick's Got Talent returns to Punch's Hotel for second year

LIMERICK'S Got Talent is returning to Patrick Punch's Hotel in August, following a very successful first year which saw winners Animal Beats shortlisted for the Bob Dylan support slot in Thomond Park.

Mike O'Connor, show producer, said that the first of their open workshops last week went "very well" and featured an eclectic mix of talented individuals ranging from singers and musicians to dancers and contortionists.

"This year we have a young heavy-metal band called 'Moro Beats Mars', a very chocolate-orientated name, playing an original number. We have a brother and sister, Manna and Alex O'Donnell from Ballynanty, performing a drum solo and singing the Amy Winehouse song Valerie.

"We also have a 17-year-old contortionist named Darragh Merritt, who has been auditioning for circuses; dance acts from Billy Franklin's dance school in Moyross; and solo singer Kim Burke who got the lead part of Dorothy in a local production of The Wiz," he told the Limerick Leader.

Anyone who missed the first workshop – in preparation for the heats from August 17 to 19 – can catch the second one at Punch's this Thursday July 29.

"The workshop gives people a chance to work with the soundsystem and backing tracks ahead of the audition stage in August. We give them tips and constructive criticism. We want to make sure everyone is properly prepared and they have all been very happy with it so far," Mr O'Connor added.

The final of Limerick's Got Talent will take place on August 20, giving one lucky act the chance to follow in the footsteps of rising stars Animals Beats. The winner will receive the Jeff Power Memorial Trophy, €500 and a music DVD recording.

The competition is in aid of Limerick's MS Society and gives anyone considering an entertainment career the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of a live audience, while receiving advice from the production team and show judges.

Applications for this year's competition are available from RK Entertainment office, Parnell St, Limerick, next door to Red Rose caf, and must be returned before Friday August 6.

The second and final workshop is on this Thursday July 29 at Punch's Hotel from 6.30 to 10pm, with all members of the public welcome to attend.

Sponsors PJR cleaning and security services will also be hosting a pre-show party on Thursday August 5 at Punch's, with live music, guest artist spots, a raffle and an opportunity to meet some of last year's acts.
