Limerick photographer wins a top national award
LIMERICK photographer Liam Burke has won a major national award for his work with Concern worldwide, which has helped to raise awareness and generate millions of euro for some of world's poorest people.
The acclaimed photographer, who already has 12 awards to his credit, received the latest accolade from President Mary McAleese at a ceremony in the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, Dublin last week.
Mr Burke, 52, was one of three people nominated in the international development category of the Specsavers sponsored Ireland Involved awards.
"I wasn't expecting to win at all because the two other nominees have formidable CVs in their volunteer work. When I did win I was in mild shock, but it was a great honour and privilege," said Mr Burke, a native of Shelbourne Park in Limerick.
But his images, which have propelled the name of Concern to a global audience, and his dedication to the charity won over the judges.
Liam has dedicates the award to the late Fr Aengus Finucane, who passed away on October 6 last, and had been chief executive of Concern for many years.
"He taught me humility, hope, kindness, compassion and love with the way he helped the poorest of the poor," said Mr Burke.
In a testament to his dedication to Concern, he flew to Africa last month while in the midst of undergoing chemotherapy for brain cancer, in an extensive trip visiting Malawi, south Sudan and Ethiopia.
Often working in difficult and challenging circumstances, he has helped to forge an identity for Concern as a leading international humanitarian organisation dedicated to reducing suffering and ending extreme poverty.
