Limerick Mayoral candidate calls for 15 years for guns
THE man expected to be named Mayor of Limerick tonight has renewed his call for mandatory 15 year sentences for those caught in possession of firearms, after a handgun was seized in the city over the weekend.
Chairman of the Joint Policing Committee, Cllr Kevin Kiely was speaking after Gardai seized a handgun discovered in a wheelie bin in Kennedy Park, late on Friday night, alongside a quantity of ammunition, as part of ongoing searches in the area.
A man from the area, believed to be in his late 50s was arrested under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
He was later released, with Gardai preparing a file for the DPP.
The gun find has been sent to Dublin for forensic examination.
Fine Gael Cllr Kiely said the seizure is not believed to be feud-related, describing the find as related to "subversive" groups in the city.
Cllr Kiely added that if he is elected as Mayor this evening, he would be calling for more gardai on the beat.
"As far as I am concerned, we need extra gardai, they need to be on the beat, and seen in and around estates of regeneration estates and given the proper backup," he said.
