Limerick man held over alleged kidnap
A LIMERICK man in his mid-30s with a history of violent crime was this Thursday morning in custody in Roxboro Garda station after being arrested on Wednesday in connection with the alleged abduction of a Leitrim taxi driver in the early hours of Monday morning.
It may have been the suspect's second 120-mile journey from Leitrim to Limerick in the space of a few days, this time in the back of a Garda vehicle.
The taxi driver from Drumshanbo picked up a fare at a rank in Carrick-on-Shannon at around midnight on Sunday and the passenger first asked to be taken to Roscommon town. When they arrived at that destination, the passenger then demanded to be driven a further 100 miles to Limerick. It is understood that when the driver refused, the passenger allegedly produced a knife and started to threaten the driver.
The driver's three-hour ordeal only ended when the passenger got out of the car near Mount St Lawrence's graveyard, but not before he robbed the driver of a small sum of cash and some personal belongings.
Gardai launched a manhunt after being given a description by the driver and a suspect was arrested in Carrick-on-Shannon by officers from Leitrim and Limerick on Wednesday morning.
He was brought back to Limerick and was this Thursday morning being detained at Roxboro under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
It is understood that the man being detained has a history of violence and was only recently released from prison.
