Limerick gardai to continue holding €16,000 in cash seized from Collopy couple

GARDAI have been granted permission to retain almost €16,000 in cash that was seized from a married couple in the city earlier this year.

Gardai believe the money, which was seized from Brian and Maria Collopy, is the proceeds of drug dealing and they told Limerick Court they needed more time to establish the source of the cash.

The money was seized last May 17 when gardai stopped a van in which Mr and Mrs Collopy were travelling. It is understood they were travelling to Limerick from Dublin at the time.

Gardai were granted a court order in May to retain the money seized for three months to facilitate their investigations. This Wednesday, they sought an extension of that order for a further three months.

Judge Tom O'Donnell was told that €7,400 in cash was seized from Mr Collopy, 38, who has an address at Clooncunna, Ballysimon. A further €8,325 was seized from Maria Collopy, 38, of Killonan, Ballysimon.

Making the application, a member of the Criminal Assets Bureau attached to Henry Street Garda station said more time was needed to determine the source of the money.

The officer told the court the money would be returned to Mr and Mrs Collopy if it was established that the money was from a legitimate source.

"If it is no longer required to be detained, it will be returned to them," he said.

Solicitor Ted McCarthy, representing Mr Collopy, requested an adjournment of the application. He said a brother of Mr Collopy's, Raymond Collopy, would give evidence that he had given his client the money.

Solicitor John Herbert, representing Ms Collopy, said his client was opposing the Garda application as she was anxious to have the money returned.

Proceedings were interrupted when the courthouse was evacuated due to a fire alarm.

When the case resumed, the judge was told that all parties had agreed to the extension of the court order for a month.

Gardai were granted permission to retain the money until October 6.
