Limerick floods: Room at the inn for Limerick baby

JUST two weeks after she was born at Limerick's Maternity Hospital, baby Ava Kirwan was taken from her cot in Shannon Banks in the arms of a rescue worker, as the rising Shannon River threatened to flood her home.

The baby stayed with her family in Jurys Inn last night along with over 30 evacuees as Shannon Banks braced itself for further flooding.

And it could be another two days before the families return to their homes.

"We didn't realise how bad it was going to get," her father, Tony told the Limerick Leader when he returned to assess the situation.

"When we were told to leave we just grabbed our stuff to go. Our priority was to gather what we needed for the baby, and as long as the kids were fine, we were happy."

Mr Kirwan has not slept for the past two nights, leaving the hotel at regular intervals during the night to check on their homes.
